negotiate, a video piece, is divided into a grid of six cells – each containing an image – of a passenger’s eyes.  These eyes are ‘framed’ as a place of connection or avoidance in public space.  The eyes also provide action – moving carefully and quickly, across the screen. The grid amplifies the isolation and compartmentalization.  It also adds humor – evoking a game-show format. Finally, the grid structure and the intermittent appearance of the words invites viewers to ‘play’ as their eyes dart around the screen, trying to read the furtive text – mirroring the eye movement occurring in the video.
